Angling angles By Dan Wells
Bass fishing always has a pattern within a pattern, and fishing a piece of structure is no different. Any off shore piece of structure will have a “sweet spot” and to find it you will need to experiment with angles!
Most times a fisherman will pull up to a point or piece of structure and fish it from shallow to deep in a straight in front of the boat fashion. This will catch fish, but to truly find the the sweet spot and dramatically increase your catch percentage, you must experiment with different cast angels.
After you have fished the structure from shallow to deep, switch your boat position to the shallow side to allow you to fish your bait up hill from deep to shallow. Cover the side angles also by repositioning the boat again to the sides of the structure you are fishing. I like to fish a piece of off structure in a 360 degree fashion so that i fish all angles. 90% of the time you will find one cast angle that will get bites 2 or 3 times more often then the straight forward cast and this will help you pattern the fish better and be more productive with your time.
Remember while fishing any piece of off shore structure or cover to experiment with your cast angle and retrieve and I promise this will improve your catch rate and decrease wasted time!
