Decided to head out to the Delta today with the wife and nephew, which had never been on a boat or fishing before. Since we only had a few hours to fish, decided to head down to Thornton/Wimpys and fish stick baits in the trees. Got there at high tide and really worm conditions already at 8:30 am. Water temps were 72 degrees and stained. Fished tree lined bank and focused on shad, as the sun was already starting to heat things up. Found fish on wtrml/blk flake D&M Stick baits, both weightless and with 1/8 ounce weight. figured this would be the easiest way to have the newphew get bites and have a chance of getting fish to the boat. Even though this was his first time fishing, he ended up being the star of the day. He caught the first 2 fish before I even had a bite. He even was able to hook into a solid 3 lber before it took him to school and broke him off around the big motor prop. Even though he lost this nice fish, he got to feel the fight for a minute and I think he may just be hooked on fishing, which is what it was all about.
I spent most of my time getting baits out of trees for my nephew as his casting is not quite great yet…but we’ll work on that! He was only able to get one of the fish he hooked into the boat and while I was taking the hook out of the fish it someone decided to get some revenge on someone for being hooked, which ended up being my hand. Needless to say, as the fish buried the hook into my thumb, I let go of it and back into the water it went… so no first fish photo for the kid! I owe him that photo, so we’ll be going out again soon ~
Take a kid out fishing, it’s rewarding no matter the outcome of the day ~
