We’ve all heard of or even fished in Take a Kid Fishing events, Veterans events, Get hooked on Fishing, not on Drugs and many other wonderful and helpful things Anglers do for the community. Often in our busy lives the people we’ve known and loved the longest, for some reason seem to slip through the cracks. I’m talking about our Parents, Uncles and Aunts, and many other older relatives and friends.
Over the last few years I’ve had the extreme pleasure of sharing a boat with wife’s Uncle.
Not screaming across the lake in bass boat, but in his John Boat, often with nothing but an electric motor pushing us around the lake.
Here’s a man who I like to say is truly “The Most Interesting Man in the World”. He once held the record for the deepest free dive (no oxygen). Was the Captain for our country’s World dive team. Ran a Crab Boat, along with a Shark and Sea Urchin Boat. He has survived a Shark attack, is the best Deer Hunter I’ve ever seen and was even a Nike Missile Operator. Age and Health issues have made it difficult for him to get on the water the last few years, but the chance to spend a day with him, listening to story’s and enjoying the outdoors together isn’t something I pass up.
There really something relaxing about spending time with a loved one, catching a mess of Rainbow Trout for Breakfast, watching a bobber get pulled under by a panfish and of course chasing after the bass.
So look around, see your Dad, your Uncle an elderly neighbor who once enjoyed the outdoors, offer to take them fishing, buy some bobbers and red worms throw them next to some brush and watch the little bluegill make more memories for your Elders. Just remember the Sunscreen, Uncle Don did get a sun burn, but he enjoyed the day….
