Future pro Tour has an answer for the “Dog Days of Summer”

July 5, 2011 by Ron Howe

Anglers Press Media Center – SACRAMENTO, Ca. – The summer months are often referred to by bass anglers as the “dog days of summer.” A phrase that actually dates back to Egyptians astrologers, who when observing Sirius – the “dog star”, noted that it could always be seen rising alongside the sun during the summer months and quickly surmised that the star provided extra heat and humidity to the air, which of course, they believed, made the days hotter.

In modern times however, most prognosticating bass anglers surmise that the hot, so-called “dog days” of summer, are the reason that largemouth bass head for deeper, cooler temperatures, where they are extremely difficult catch. And for most, only two choices exist. Either spend the day baking in the hot sun while you dropshot for fish that you believe have moved to deeper water…or simply put away your bass boat for the summer and wait for the cooler temperatures of fall to arrive.

But hold on….you now have third choice.

Go get your boat, load it up with lots of top water offering such as big frogs, giant buzzbaits, wakebaits, and rattlin’ Zara spooks, and get ready for an event that will help re-define the meaning of the “dog days” of summer.

What event? …..The Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tours  – Big Bass Braw” – “Best of Both Bites” event,  a regular season two-day event to be held Saturday, August 13, and Sunday August 14 on beautiful Clearlake, launching out of Redbud Park.

A “Best of both Bites” format

Think about it…how often do you get the opportunity to fish in a tournament that presents you with the most opportunities to compete for those “BIG BITES” that you know mostly occur during the late evening hours, where YOU KNOW the big monster bass are usually most active, and then – the next day, apply those same topwater techniques to the summer morning hours where YOU KNOW the summer top water bite is always at its best!

Well here is your chance as this will be a regular season, northern region Future Pro Tour team event that will bring with it a unique challenge that will allow anglers to fish the best “fish-catching” hours of each day.

On Saturday, day one, anglers will blast off at 1:30pm with the first weigh-in commencing at 7:30pm. All weights for that day will be calculated, and carried over to the following day where the field of anglers will then blast off at safelight to begin that day’s competition. The  2nd day final weigh-in period will begin at appx 11:00am, after which we will crown the event’s champions!

Get your sleep – AND get your grub on!

Everyone will concede that today’s challenging economy has made it more difficult for anglers to take off from work early to fish. And for those that can’t take off early, when they finally get their gear together to make that long evening run to the lake, the idea of getting up to go fish just mere hours from when they arrived, can make for a long day on the water.

The format of this event allows you to go to work on Friday, rest and hang out with the family, get in the bed whenever, and then get up the next day and have a relaxing drive to Clearlake! What’s better is that when you arrive at Redbud Park all anglers will be treated to a nice Tri-tip BBQ lunch – with all the fixin’s beginning at 11:00am, courtesy of the Greater Clearlake chamber of commerce.

And while you are enjoying your food, you will be able to participate in several informative seminars at Clearlake Bait and Tackle that will be conducted by some of the FPT’s top pro-support staff members who just happen to be some of the best professional anglers on Clearlake.

FLW Champion Jimmy Reese,  Vanity Cup and recent Anglers Choice Pro Am champion Mark Crutcher, Multi-Pro Am/team Champion Wayne Brazeale, and partner Jerry Tilton (“the Godfather” of Clearlake), are just a few of the pros that will all be on hand to share with you some of the techniques that have made them successful on this fertile and massive body of water.

Book early

The city of Clearlake has a wide variety of lodging options, very close by the Redbud Park launch facility, as well as a good choice of local eateries to choose from. But be sure you call early to make your lodging arrangements, as this will be a big event and lodging options will surely dwindle they as the event draws near.

If you are going up to pre-fish, and don’t know what to throw or where to go…do not worry, as there are many tackle stores in the area – Clearlake Bait and Tackle, Limit Out Tackle, and Tackle IT, that carry the most effective baits currently used on Clearlake. These tackle shops will be open early to serve you, so stop by, pick up the baits you think you need, while you get the “latest news” on what’s going on at the lake as each tackle shop owner is a fantastic Clearlake angler in their own right.

So stop worrying about how to beat the heat of the “dog days of summer”, and let’s get “READY TO RUMBLE” as the FPT presents the BIG BASS Brawl – “Best Bite” event that is sure to bring out the best in anyone that desires to catch BIG FISH on top water during the summertime.

For more information about this exciting event, lodging options, and how you can participate, please visit the Future Pro Tour website, or call the FPT offices ANYTIME and we will be happy to provide you with all the information you need.

See you all there!
