Some days we need to just slow down and break away from bass fishing so I saw an opportunity to spend some time with my Dad so we decided to go chase Sturgeon. With a ton of fish moving through the system right now we headed to our favorite bait shop Benicia bait and tackle to get some bait and see some old friends. We headed for the fifth street launch with a little wind and great conditions we headed for the Mothball fleet. As I prepared the rods pops picked an old spot in front of the fleet in about 16 feet of water and on a incoming tide we had 49 degree water temps, pops set anchor and we started marking fish right away. I baited the okuma deiziel series rod with grass shrimp covered in pro cure and the other with a pile worm eel combo using a 8 oz ball weight and a weighted Sturgeon leader we started getting bit right away!
People always ask me why the ball weight and not the triangle well it’s simple there’s a lot of plant life is dying off and rolls across the bottom and gets stuck on the triangle weight but not on the ball weight. With just a little lift of the rod the junk will roll off the round surface . We quickly started putting fish in the boat just under keeper size about two hours went buy and BOOM our first keeper came on the shrimp procure Sturgeon frenzy combo, so we decided to take some pictures and let that one go. After five shakes or so the tide was winding down so we moved up above the fleet for the out going tide and to a little deeper water were we caught some shakers and a few good ones. All in all I had a great day out on the water with the man who showed me the way in life and fishing thanks Dad for spending every moment with me growing up on the water and teaching me about fishing .
