Bass Pro Shops go outdoors event

April 27, 2011 by Ron Howe

Springfield, Missouri- As a child, you probably remember your parents telling you “Go outdoors and play–it’s good for you!” Now, as an adult, with kids of your own, you realize your parents were right. With today’s overwhelming obsession for electronic gadgets and a digitalized society, wouldn’t it be nice, once in a while, for you and the kids to ‘un-plug’ and head outdoors for some fresh air? Now you can during the National Go Outdoors Event going on at 52 Bass Pro Shops store locations from May 20th through May 30th.

Bass Pro Shops’ National Go Outdoors Event is a way to give kids (and adults) the chance to learn about the outdoors and the reason why is simple. Kids need this chance to re-connect with the outdoors to learn valuable lessons -how to swim, how to camp, first aid, survival techniques, orienteering, conservation-but more importantly, to become good stewards of the land and its natural resources, to feel good about themselves and to improve their general health and well-being. Likewise, studies suggest that families that interact together outdoors create lasting bonds by making life-long memories.

Exciting free events at the stores could include canoe and kayak demonstrations, casting contests, rock climbing walls, GPS classes, kid’s crafts, outdoor skills workshops, outdoor survival training, games and activities and much more. There’s even the opportunity to get a great free 4×6 Family Photo. (Events will vary per store. Please visit www.basspro.com/gooutdoorsand select individual store location for complete events listing.)

The Go Outdoors event also includes free “Summer Kickoff” weekend activities May 21-22 and May 28-29.Saturdays at 1pm and 3pm kids can learn basic camping skills such as how to select a campsite, properly roll a sleeping bag and build a safe campfire. They can also learn how to use a compass while camping and hiking and even make one to take home. Sundays at 1pm and 3pm they will have the chance to find out how to choose and mark the right nature trails, identify trees and do a ‘leaf rubbing’ activity

“One of the most exciting and invigorating places to go this summer is just beyond your front door,” said Larry Whiteley, Bass Pro Shops Manager of Communications. “Bass Pro Shops is committed to helping adults and children across the nation put away their laptops, video games, and cell phones and head outdoors. Whether it’s fishing, hiking through a local park, or simply laying on your lawn watching the stars at night, there are so many great things to do outdoors this summer.”

If you’re already looking ahead to summer and wondering what you are going to do with the kids, don’t forget to investigate summer programs that your local Park Board, YMCA, or Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts offer that will help them benefit from being outside. In the meantime, begin with Bass Pro Shops’ National Go Outdoors Event at your local Bass Pro Shops store location.

While at Bass Pro Shops, register to win the “Family Vacation for Life”. One National Grand Prize will be awarded to one winner nationwide and consists of the deeded timeshare interest at a Bluegreen Wilderness Club™ property, with the first ten year’s maintenance fees and club dues paid. In addition, the winner will receive a check in the amount of $20,000. The total combined approximate retail value of the prize is $55,520. (All federal and other tax liabilities are the sole responsibility of the winner.) Each store location will also select a First Place winner who will receive a gift package with a retail value of nearly $600.00. See store for more details.

This year, commit to getting outdoors with your kids for all your health’s sake. Visit Bass Pro Shops during the National Go Outdoors Event, interact with your family in the great outdoors and make some memories to last a lifetime.
