I have been on a Spotted Bass mission since November with all my time dedicated to learning Lake Oroville. It was time for a change and make a trip back to the Delta. I have not fished here since October. With recent storms and massive dirty cold water runoff I needed to find clean water to improve my chances at finding some bass to bite. To do this you must know the dead end sloughs that are away from the heavy runoff of the sierra mountains in the eastern delta. There are several areas with clean water and the bass are there too!
I did not want to have to change all my gear in my boat over to delta tackle, so I just grabbed a few baits and headed down to the delta, muddy floody hole! I took a box of D&M Pirahna swim jigs and my favorite swim jig trailers. A few flippin baits including the new Havoc baits from Berkley and some new D&M custom baits flippin craws in the 4.5 size. And I had to have a few spinnerbaits in the boat so I grabbed a few Persuader 1/2 oz chartruese and white baits with a gold willow blade and a small colorado blade for extra thumping in the stained water. For my rods im using a 7″ ABU Garcia Verdict bait cast rod in medium heavy action with a new ABU Garcia Revo SX reel with a 7:1 gear ratio. I string alll my rods up with Berkley Trilene 100% Flourocarbon line for flipping senkos. I also grabbed my new ABU Garcia Verdict Flippin rod a 7-3″ medium heavy casting rod texas rigged with a glass bead on for added sound in dirty water and for swimming the Jig Im using a ABU Garcia Vendetta 7″ medium heavy action again with a Revo Sx baitcast reel. For colors on the baits I keep it simple the swim jigs are green pumpkin and black and blue with matching trailers and my spinnerbaits I prefer chartruese and white skirts for good visability in the stained water. Senkos and flippin baits in blacks and colors with red or red flake in them.
On this rainy and windy day the D&M Piranha swim jigs were the ticket! Slow rolling the bait and ticking the top of the grass beds on flats was the key. The fish were not tight to the cover but roaming the flats to feed on bluegill. The bite is real soft then your rod loades up so let them eat it! We did catch a few senko fish as well in protected areas on flats and near sparse tules. The fish are grouped up when you find them so cover alot of water, but when you find them pick that area apart! Most fish were from 2 to 5lbs each. All in all a wet windy good day on the water.
Good luck
