What an amazing week of fishing!! Fishing FLW on the California Delta has always been a dream for me, going up against some of the best in the west. I started off practicing Monday on the southern end of the Delta. Tuesday I worked the central Delta and Wednesday I fished Franks Tract to find some last minute spots. By Tuesday evening I came up with a solid plan, Day1 fish central Delta and Day 2 fish down south. I knew day two would be a gamble because I only got a few bites, but they were nice fish however I found a lot of fish in Franks Tract flipping a drop shot around. Day1 came around and the nerves were higher then ever, i had the butterflies it was unbelievable. I was sitting in the water waiting for the National Anthem to be played and numbers to be called for blast-off and then it just hit me. I looked around and I was surrounded by some of the best fishermen in the west; I’m next to Troy Lindner just off his Lake Havasu victory, Robert Lee, Dee Thomas, Greg Guterrez and Jimmy Reese. I idolized these guys when I was younger and now I’m right there fishing against them.
I started the first day cranking the central delta, I manged to stick a 5 and 4 pounder first thing in the morning, after that I threw a jerk bait around to fill up my limit. About 9:30 I had a limit and started to up grade little by little with a crankbait. I pulled up to the dock for weigh-ins and I heard 30 pounds was leading and 22 was in the top ten I started to freak out, thinking to myself I have maybe 18 pounds. So, I get weigh bags, start putting fish in the bags, and I realize wow! I might have more than what I think. However I had a 2 1/2 fish that I couldn’t get rid of. I get to the scales and I busted the Top Ten with 23.5. I was in shock and speechless at the same time. Everyone was in shock an 18 year old kid threw down 23 pounds and is in the a Top Ten.
Day 2 started off, the plan down south was a gamble but if I caught’ em I would be right in the hunt. I went in to Day two with the mind set of I just need to catch a limit and i would be fine. However I needed at least 18 to 19 to break the top ten. The plan didn’t work out like it was supposed to, by 1:30 I had a limit for 9 pounds. I went to my back up water at 2:00 manged to cull a few fish. I ended up with 12 pounds and a grand total of 35.5 that bumped me to 19th place. I really can’t complain about where I finished for my first FLW as a Pro.
I found a lot of fish on rock walls with some sparse tules.I noticed that the bigger fish came first thing in the morning on reactions. Throwing red cranks like Ima’s Hot Craw in the Rock’N Vibe and Square Bill. I started to throw a jerk bait around and filled up my limit and started to up grade from their. I was throwing a mix of jerk baits from Ima’s Flit 100 to Lucky Crafts 125 pointer, they seemed to like the Chartreuse Shad even in the stained water. The last day I did cull a limit drop shoting sparse tules in Franks Tract. This event will probably be one of my most memorable experience in my life. I would like to thank my following sponsors: Outdoor Sportsmen, Wrapped Graphics, 51 Fifty Energy Drink, and RBBass Fishing. Without their support I wouldn’t have done this good.
I hope this info helps you on your next day of fishing.
