Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report

December 27, 2013 by Ron Howe

Lake Okeechobee

12/26/13 Lake Okeechobee.

Water temp: 72-75°
Clarity: 2ft
Wind: SW 25mph
Temp: morning- 65°
Afternoon-80°

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. I know I did on the 26th my dad and I were able to slip away and do a little fishing. Equipped with our new rods and reels we decided to put in at slims fish camp off of torry island in the south end of the lake. We got on the water 35mins before sunlight and headed over to boy scout and started to fish a Black and Gold Scum frog trophy series. We went 20ft off the vegetation and thru up into the pencil reeds. Got a few bites and hooked up into two near 10lbs bass and boated one. Around ten o’clock we ran up to pelican bay. This is when the fishing got hot. Once again went 20ft off the vegetation and took out or flipping rods. We flipped a 1 ounce weight with a 5/0 Owner Offset hook and a Gambler lures black and blue punch skirt and a Gambler black and blue Ugly otter with all three paddles split. We caught a ton of bass flipping around the reeds in pelican bay it was on FIRE! These fish are in the pre spawn stage and are hitting very aggressive. We boated 2 HUGE bass and several over 8lbs. We then trolling motor the 300yds to the rock reef and thru a bomber 5a in fire tiger and caught a few bass. Lake Okeechobee has been very hot lately and will continue to produce bigger and bigger bass as the spawn continues. Focus on the outside grass lines in the morning and when the sun gets high go into the grass after them. In backwater canals some bass are spawning. We’ve been catching huge quantities of bass from the west wall all the way up to J&S fish camp. Keep fishing and good luck.
Tight lines,
