Location: New Melonies Lake

Wind direction/speed: 10-25 mph
Water temperature: 57-61 degrees
Water clarity: 2-15 feet
Target depth: 1-25 feet
Barometric pressure: high pressure/post frontal
Moon phase: waxing crescent visibility 26%
Seasonal fish pattern: pre-spawn/spawn
On April 10, 2019 I decided to head up to New Melones Lake to try my luck at fishing up there. The recent Wild West Bass Trail Pro Am Series tournament trail held their tournament the week prior, and some of the weights that were recorded were pretty impressive.
Shortly after launching at the Tuttletown launch I ran West towards the spill way. The wind was blowing 10-25 mph out of the North, so I started working mud lines on North facing banks. My bait of choice was a Keitech USA Swimbait 4.8 in a pearl white color. That bait was a fixed to a 1/4 ounce darter head and slow rolled off the bottom.

My efforts rewarded me with immediate results, and I boated an unlimited amount of cookie cutter size spotted bass around two pounds. Action was fast and furious and the water temperature in this area was 61 degrees.

Mud lines were definitely the deal, but the wind picked up close to 25 mph so these areas were just unsustainable. I ran further North in an effort to find areas that were more protected from the brisk North wind.
I located down timber, brush piles, and horse grass vegetation in numerous little bays. I started marking fish in 15-20 feet of water. The fish appeared to be actively feeding on bait fish. Because of the depth I upgraded my presentation to a 1/2 ounce underspin tipped with a 4.8 size keitech USA Swimbait. Approximately twenty minutes went by without a bite so I decided to slow down a bit.

I tied on the same presentation to a 20 lb fluorocarbon setup, and set my minn Kota fortrex into spot lock. I walked to the back of the boat and made the longest casts possible to maximize depth/bottom contact. This was definitely the deal and it allowed me to boat several fish in the three pound class.

As the afternoon progressed into evening I ran to the South end of the lake to look for bed fish. I saw several descent sized bass on beds as I worked my way to the backs of coves. I found a bank with some active feeding fish and I slow rolled my swimbait through the area they were located. I caught two bass in the miniature variety before I slopped into a feeding frenzy of crappie.
