5/17/14 Lake Berryessa Fishing Report
Fished the BBT Delta/Wine Region tournament with my partner Bob Tyler on Saturday. The water temps were in the mid 70’s with mixed water visibility. We started the morning fishing Spooks up north around points and the back of coves on the west side. We had lots of fish roll on our baits but just couldn’t get them to commit. Made a run to the mouth of Pope Creek and continued throwing top water in the ultra clear water there. Had some vey nice fish follow the lures back to the boat but again just not attacking the bait so we switched to a Drop Shot and a River2Sea S-waver since they didn’t want to come up but no luck with those either. Moved back to the flats on the west side were Bob started Drop Shoting a Morning Dawn Pro Worm and I threw a nail weighted Slugo in the Albino Shad color. ( Yup, old school bait I know, but they still work!) We found a huge shell bed covered with spawning bluegill in about 9 ft. of water and started fishing the outside area. Bob hooked a 5.63 and I caught a 4.01 along with a half dozen 1 to 2lb. fish all near the bluegills. The bite slowed around noon when the wind picked up and clouded the water. We switched to Spinnerbaits and Chatterbaits but only caught short fish. We ended the day with a 17.95lb bag for 17th place. There are still fish spawning but most are in a post spawn mode. Hope this helps if you make plans to hit the lake, still a great place to catch Large Mouth, Small Mouth and Spotted bass all in the same day!
Good luck fishing, Bob Pietruszka.
