I hit the delta this past Saturday, launched out of Ladd’s Marina. The tide was high outgoing most of the day. I started at 6 a.m. throwing top water most of the morning, which was very unsuccessful. I went from throwing buzzbaits to wakebaits to hollow belly frogs and still nothing. So I pick up flipping stick around 9:30, targeting isolated vegetation with current. I picked up 7 fish between 9:30 and 11:00, fish averaged between 3 and 4 ½ pounds however I did manage to get a kicker fish just over 7 pounds. I mainly focused my time around the west delta bouncing around from rocks to tule islands.
My bait of choice was a Green Pumpkin Double-Wide Beaver made by Reaction Innovations. Rigged with a 1oz River2Sea Trash Bomb and 6/0 Trokar Straight Shank Flipping Hook. Line of choice was Sunline 60 pound FX Froggin and Flipping Braid. Paired up with a 8′ Phenix M1 MH rod and a Daiwa Tatula 6.3:1 casting reel.
This time of year you have to stay positive. The bite on the delta can be like a light switch at times with a small window. However when do get that window of opportunity you have to capitalize on your bites.
I hope this will help you on your next trip
