My buddy Steven Rodriguez and I returned to Camp Far West for a day of fun fishing. When I checked the weather forecast the night before our trip it called for increasing cloud cover and wind starting at 6 m.p.h. and increasing to 18 with gusts of 22 followed with evening showers. My friend Brad Carter got on a great swimbait bite the previous Saturday with the same wind conditions and sunny, so I rigged a Swimmin Super Fluke Jr. White Ice on a 3/8 oz jig and also decided with the overcast and wind to tie on a 3/8 oz Strike King Triple Wing Buzzbait in white. We launched around 8 am with a temp of 59 and water visibility of 1 ½ ft. and a light wind. Ran a short way up Rock Creek and started on the east side working the wind blown points. Within the first 15 minutes I boated 2 fish and missed one on the buzzbait. I tossed the fluke to see if that was and option and hooked up one on that.
I decided to stay with the buzzbait for the rest of the day (So much fun busting fish off the top!). Steven had never fished a buzzbait so I gave him mine and tied on a 3/8 oz Persuader Double Buzzer white and chartreuse. A short time later he caught his first buzzbait fish. I kept working the buzzbait and Steven threw a Keitech 3.3 Electric Shad. The wind by 10 am was blowing a solid 16 and gusting higher so we worked back into Rock Creek where we caught fish on the buzzbait, swimbait , and my old stand by Berkley Gulp Minnow, Smelt color on a 1/8 oz ball head jig. Average fish size was 1-1/2 lbs. and our biggest around 2 ½-3. Steven’s biggest fish came off a submerged tree on the swimbait and mine came off the buzzbait on a isolated bush after making 10+ casts thru it. Finally ticked it off enough to bite!
