On April 18, 2018 I had the pleasure of guiding Kyle Gomes on the beautiful New Melones reservoir. We launched promptly at 6:30 am from the Tuttle Town boat ramp which is located towards the south end of the lake.
Upon launching we ran directly towards the dam in search of locations where we could entice a topwater bite. Both Kyle and I were throwing super spooks and River2sea rovers around chunk rock and submerged trees.
The action was almost instantaneous and we each had several hook ups on spotted bass which were in the 1-3 pound class. The bigger bites came from ten to fifteen foot of water where trees were present.
After catching our fair share of fish we headed towards the south end of the lake to target wind blown main lake points. I had Kyle throwing a drop shot while I slow rolled a 3” Keitech on an 1/8 ounce ball head.
These particular techniques produced unlimited bites however the quality of fish we were catching was lacking. After catching well over thirty fish we decided to switch techniques. I decided to throw a River2sea S waver 200 in the light trout pattern and I had Kyle throwing a 6” senko rigged wacky style.
We began targeting secondary points towards the big creek arms and were immediately rewarded. Kyle landed a beautiful four pound spotted bass and I had several big fish follow my S waver however they wouldn’t commit.
All in all it was a fun day catching well over forty fish. We didn’t get the big ones figured out but we had a lot of fun.
