First and foremost, we here at RB Bass would like to pay our respects to those who have fought and those who are currently fighting to protect the freedoms we enjoy here in the U.S.A. We understand that without these brave men and women we would not be able to live like we do or fish like we do without them.
RB Bass Anglers from all over Northern California headed to Clear Lake to take part in the annual RB Bass Memorial Day party and BBQ, which also consists of a few days of fishing for and a year of bragging rights. The Anglers were met with changing weather conditions and finicky bass. Although the North state was working on a consistently warm trend mother nature felt it necessary to challenge the anglers with a cooling trend and rain showers.
Ryan Hall and Ron Howe fished Friday in between rain showers and were able to put together a solid bag. Ryan and Ron fished mid-lake south focusing primarily on the Red Bud arm. The day started out slow with only a few bites in the first 2 hours. Ron and Ryan made a key area change to a stretch of docks near spawning areas and immediately started catching fish. Ron got the day rolling with a 4+lber and some other solid fish, Ryan later caught a 6lber on a shaky head to help them grind out an 18lb limit.
Charles Cornelison continued his hot streak of catching the wrong species on a Canopy Grenades Football Jig. He landed a couple of healthy Catfish this weekend while hopping his jig.
Michael Coleman and Chris Perez followed RB Bass angler Adrian Murar around the lake for a little while and got some awesome footage of Adrian competing in the National Western B.A.S.S. Nation event. Congrats to Adrian on coming in 2nd place in the State of California.
After a quick lunch break at Richmond Park Bar and Grill Mike Coleman, Chris Perez, and Steve Wilson put a hurting on the crappie. Combined they landed over 100 crappie in less than 2 hours.
More anglers arrived Saturday and host for the weekend Bob Tyler threw together a frog only outing. Luckily for the anglers the weather warmed up some to allow them to catch their fair share of frog fish. Ron Howe and Kevin Cornwell edged out the competition.
Preston was sporting his new Dukes of Hazzard “General Lee” wrapped Phoenix boat.
Later in the evening the RB Bass crew enjoyed a tasty BBQ put together by grill master Ron Howe.
Sunday, the “Clear Lake Cup” took place. 12 Boats hit the lake in this team style event. The bite continued to improve with warming weather and the field all caught good limits. The team of Michael Coleman and Adrian Murar won the event with a solid limit of clones. They fished out of Adrian’s new Phoenix from Gold Key Boat House. Charles Cornelison and Ryan Hall were runner up with a 7.01 big fish. Ryan Hall won the Sheldon Bisbee “Netman of the Year” award by netting Cornelison’s 7.01lb stallion.
Sunday night after fishing the anglers headed back to Bob Tyler’s house on the water to continue the festivities. The night was full of laughs, drinks, and great food.
Everyone headed home on Monday, but Ron Howe and Ryan Hall hit the water for a few hours before having to pack up and head home. Ron and Ryan fished the North end of the lake targeting more top water fish. Ron started off hot once again by sticking a 6.5lber on a frog and another 6lber on a prototype River2Sea bait. Ryan and Ron filled out the rest of the limit with 3.5-4lbers to help them sack up a 22lb bag.
All in all it was a great weekend with great people. The fishing was good with big fish to be caught. It seemed to be a grind for all the anglers, but the fish were found in pods. They would go for a while without a bit but ones they found one they would catch a few more in that area. The lake seems to be healthy considering the massive fish die off that took place in July and August of 2017. There are tons of fish in the 2-3lb range and fish larger than that were harder to find. Anglers caught fish in a variety of ways from shallow top water and sight fishing to deep and offshore.
