The Frog!
Let face it, you have been waiting for the frog season to hit in full swing and it is here! Some anglers have been finding a solid frog bite since early March and in the correct areas you will. It’s that anticipation of a blowup through a weed mat or any heavy cover that gets the blood pumping! Now, with the hotter days hitting the low 100’s it is starting to become wide open and will continue to be awesome until late fall. What’s great about the frog is it is so versatile. The frog can mimic a lot of natural forage. Is it a bird, a crawdad, a shad, a bluegill, or even a mouse? The answer is all of the above and more! The other bonus to the frog is it can be cast tight into cover without getting snagged. Let’s face it you can’t throw a typical treble hook loaded popper or crankbait in heavy cover or a weed bed without snagging or consistently removing salad. We don’t have time for that headache.

The Bully Wa II 55 size weighs in at 7/16oz and is a mere 2 1/4” in length. This is an outstanding frog when the bite is tougher and they aren’t committing to the larger profile frogs. I also walk this frog slowly in open water in clear lakes with great results.

The Spittin Wa 55 size weighs in at 9/16oz and is 2 1/4” in length. This frog is a smaller model popping frog and works great as a popper. It also has a great walking action. Use these when the bite is tougher and you need a smaller profile in lightly choppy water.
The Spittin Wa 70 size weighs in at 7/8oz and is a half inch larger at 2 3/4” in length. This is a larger profile popping frog and has its place when you need to move more water. I recommend this frog size when the bite requires a lot of commotion and there is some wind chop. Here is a Beautiful Double Digit caught by Michael Birch of RBBass on the Spittin Wa 70!

The last of the current line up is the New Ish’s Phat Mat Daddy! This frog is a little larger weighing in at 3/4oz and is 2 3/4” in length. It comes with a Rattle that hangs off the rear and makes a great fleeing baitfish sound as you walk it. So far in my testing of this frog it has had a solid hook up ratio teasing some quality fish and walks with ease! Here is a recent 8+ I tricked with the New Ish’s Phat Mat Daddy Frog.

How about the option of tricking out your Frog with a Plopper tail trailer or a rattle that easily attaches to the hooks? River2sea has you covered with the Frog Kit!
Rod choice is critical. You want a fairly solid rod with some tip action so you can perfect your frog walk! You don’t want a broom stick. I use the Denali Rods L824FG Lithium Frog Rod and have had great success with it. This Rod is built with a very lightweight IM8+ Graphite Blank and has a heavy action with a moderately Fast tip. Just enough to have some back bone to crank them in and give you that perfect action. There are a lot of great Rod brands with solid choices you just have to feel them out to find the perfect fit for you.
For reel choice I like a Reel that holds a decent amount of 50LB or larger Braid. I have found that a lower gear ratio will allow me to launch a frog a mile. I currently use an older Shimano Curado 300 series with a 6.2:1 gear ratio. This has worked well for me for years.

The last advice on frog fishing I can throw in here is take your time while frog fishing. It can be exciting when they smash it! However, don’t be hasty. If you pull away too quickly they may not have it, I always pace myself and check it to make sure my rod loads up before setting the hook. If they miss you can throw back to the exact spot and get them to strike again if there still fired up, but be fast and make a quiet entry. Try not to miss your target, even a foot to the side can cause them to turn off sometimes.
