As we move toward warm weather and clear skies the fishing is starting to show signs of improving. The bite has been very hit or miss as fish in all parts of the delta are transitioning from the depths of winter to early spring spawning grounds. There are a variety of baits working, I tend to keep it simple with green pumpkin colors or black and red depending on water clarity. Senko type baits have been producing action on the inside of islands closer to spawning flats. Punching has also been producing on either side of the tide, predominantly on the first few hours of high switch. Look for key places where fish will hold before making an appearance in spawning flats for key punch bites. Don’t be afraid to run rip rap with crankbaits in craw patterns as well. Let’s remember to be respectful to other anglers and pleasure boaters during this beautiful weather, everyone wants to enjoy a piece of this great fishery! Good luck and watch your slack!
