California Delta Fishing Report
Delta has been fishing spotty for most people. I’ve been catching quality fish on variety of different baits it’s been pretty neat. Punching, chatterbaits, topwater. We have even caught quite a few fish over 5 lbs on the old spinning rod believe it or not. Plastics have been catching big ones on cold windy days as well as dead calm 80 degree days. I have been throwing simple colors like green pumpkin, watermelon red, or black and blue some days. Mornings have been tough for me. I will luck into one here and there but my big bites have been coming from 11am on. Fish are in all three stages. Prespawn and post spawn fish have been in heavy current while the rest are in protected areas bedding which honestly has been tricky for me to find locked on females but I am looking forward to this upcoming moon. I had a good finish two weeks ago in the Wild West pro/am on the delta coming in 8th place. The first day I had 2 fish at noon then chattered 21 lbs in the wind. The second day was a grind. Dead calm but managed to catch a 8 pounder last minute on a spinning rod that I saw cruising the bank earlier that day. The third day I started punching hydrilla around noon after I waisted many hours bed fishing. I ended up punching a 8+ and a 4+ but couldn’t catch any other decent fish to go with it. I am still guiding heavily and have some days free for a trip. If you are looking to learn some new delta tactics and how I approach the delta the next couple months give me a call and let’s plan a day!
