January 2011
I decided to fish the CA Delta today to play around with some of the new D&M Custom Baits with a fellow RBBASS pro-staffer and my tournament partner Jeff Czapla. We decided to fish up north and spent a few hours up in the meadows. The water was very dirty and temp was 47.8 with bone chilling air temps. I heard that the bite was extremely tough on the river right now, which held true for us today. I started out using a D&M Crazy Craw in Black/Blue Flash in the 5” version including a Mag Punch Skirt in watermelon red for extra bulk, action and contrast in color. I soon found that the Crazy Craw has “Crazy action with just a little movement of the bait, which after hopping it a couple times off the bottom produced a bite that almost took the rod out of my hand, which by the time I gathered my composure, had of course missed the fish. Soon after that, set the hook on another fish and came back with a redesigned Crazy Craw…minus both giant claws. We played around in the area for a while longer before jumping to a couple other spots with no luck. We ended our day fishing a small stretch there at the New Hope launch, which had much better looking water. I decided to change up my Black/Blue Flash CC for the Delta Craw color to see how it matched with the watermelon red skirt…it looked awesome…I can’t wait to play around with the D&M product line more…
We also tried various things like drop shotting, senko’s, rippin, and pitchin jigs but did not have any success with any of them. The river won the battle today, but the Crazy Craw and I will have our revenge.
Good Luck fishin ~
