Over the past couple of months, I’ve spent a good amount of time targeting largemouth bass throughout the Central Delta, focusing mainly on areas like Mildred, Middle River, Little Mandeville Island, Whites Slough, Disappointment Slough, and Potato Slough. My outings have included a mix of evening trips during the week and Saturday morning runs, and overall, the Delta has been fishing well – though it’s definitely had its moody days. In May, the post-spawn bite was in full swing. Fish were scattered but aggressive, and I found success primarily with chatterbaits and crankbaits around weed edges, current seams, and riprap banks. As water temps warmed into June, the topwater bite started picking up. Frogs over mats and cheese have produced solid blow-ups, especially during low-light hours and around shaded stretches. On tougher days, I slowed down with Senkos and punching rigs in the thick stuff, especially in areas with more pressure or less tidal movement. Punching has been key for getting quality bites under hyacinth and heavy vegetation, particularly during the midday lull or slack tide. While the Delta can still humble you, especially with inconsistent tides or pressure changes, there are plenty of fish to be caught right now for anglers willing to cover water and adjust. If you like to power fish, this is a great time to be out there—just keep an open mind and be ready to change things up when the bite gets tough.
