Chatter baits are on of my favorite baits to use to catch bass.
The main reason for this is I catch “BIG ONES” fishing like this! This bait can be worked many ways and some refere to it as a swim jig. I feel this depends on how you retrieve the bait. A steady retrieve will create a consistant swiming action. This is more of a swim jig approach. If you snap your rod tip and pause between snaps you will create eratic movement that create a change of direction, this will force the bass to react and snap at the bait. This type of change in direction is the same method many swim bait fisherman use to get big Bass to commit to swim baits. I feel when you use the chatter bait in a fast and snapping retrieve it’s much like yo yo-ing a rattle trap and Bass just cant stand it.
I use chatter baits to mimic, crawfish, bluegill, shad and baby bass. Match the color to the primary forage at that time of year. if you do this you will find that chatter baits catch BIG BASS!
Some of my favorite Chatter Baits are:
The original chatter bait it has the best Vibration period! You do have to sharpen the hook as the stock hook is not my favorite.
Next is the D&M custom baits Piranha Swim Jig these guys flat out got it right! Great colors great action and a 5/0 Gamakatsu super sharp hook. I use this bait for more of a swimming action on a consistant retreive.
Last but not least is the D&M custom baits Super Mag Piranha swim jig this big bad boy has a 8/0 Gamakatsu long shank hook on it. This allows me to use huge trailers on this swim jig and create a monster profile for monster bass!
Good Luck
