I decided to hit Folsom Lake with a buddy this past Sunday. We got on the water out of Granite Bay at 6:40 am with a breeze, slight chop, water temps at 74′ and lower lake levels. We took a very short run and started throwing a super spook around and above rock piles, which only took about 7 casts to get the first of several 2.5 fish in the boat. I was able to bring up a few more on the spook including a 5.61 lb spot that exploded on my bait and provided an awesome fight. Once the top water bite shut down I decided to move down the water column and started throwing blades (Persuader 1 ounce) and deep diving crank baits (Ima, Poes and Strike King). We continued throwing these baits for about 15 minutes with no luck, so went down to the bottom. I backed out into about 45 foot of water and while doing so marked a nice bait ball in 32 feet, we began casting 3 inch leaches (smoke blk/purple flake) on a dart head and began catching fish again. One fish that came off right at the boat keyed us into something else… it spit a big craw pincher that was reddish orange. The bite shut down as fast as it started with the leach/reaper, so I started throwing a Berkeley Havoc Craw Fatty in watermelon/red with red dipped craws on a 1/2 football head and started picking up more fish including a couple more 2-3 lbrs.
We moved around a couple times but could not mirror the success we had earlier, so decided to take a couple pictures and head back to the ramp. Really fun 4 hours on the water and even was able to get off at 10:30 before all of the craziness started on the lake.
