Took a week day off from work to fish Folsom Lake. My fishing buddy David Gretler and I hit the water at 8:00 a.m. launching out of Granite Bay. Water temp was 66 and the lake was flat as glass. We made a quick run to some rock piles and I started throwing a River2SEA S-Waver and a Osprey swim bait. The water clarity was about 7ft and I didn’t see a single bait fish, bluegill, or bass up shallow. Nothing hit or followed my baits. We then moved out to deeper water and I started to graph bass and bait in 15 to 25 ft. I just wanted to catch a big fish so I stayed with the big baits letting them sink down to the bottom but still nothing. David was throwing a brown jig with plastic trailer and a drop shot. Still no bites. We continued to move around what’s left of the main body, hitting points, coves and rock piles. Found pockets of fish here and there on the graph, all still in the 15 to 25 ft range, but lock jawed. We started to work our way up the north fork hitting everything I knew would hold fish but still nothing. By 4 p.m. I figured it was time to give up on trying to catch a big fish and salvage my pride by catching something, so I pulled out my no fail Folsom rig. A small lead head jig with a 3” Gulp minnow on 4# test. Bingo! Caught 2 spots and David hooked up a spot on his drop shot. The water temp was now only 67 so not a lot of change there but maybe the fish up north are more active. I talked with two of my friends, Jeff Burnett and Brian West, Folsom Lake regulars who always stick fish, and they had a tough day too. They fished for 4 hours from 9 to 12 and caught one fish that Brian caught on a brown jig. I’m sure that this lake is about to go wide open once the water temps start to drop. I hope this report helps you dial in the fish if you give it a try.
