Took a quick trip out to Folsom lake. Got on the water around 10am and noticed how clear and cold the water was. I also noticed that the lake is extremely low for this time of year. Full capacity is 466 feet in elevation, the lake today was at 410 feet in elevation. So I decided to fish some main lake points searching for stained water. I threw an Heavy Limits A Rig searching for fish shallow and working my way to about 30 feet of water. For the first 2 hours I was getting a few short strikes.
They were eating the tail off but not fully committing. So I rigged up a smaller 3.3 swimbaits and continued to search for stained water throughout the main body and south arm of the lake.
Finally around noon the wind picked up to 5mph and I found some color in the water. Almost instantly the bite turned on and I started to land some fish. Nothing big but a consistent 2lb bite. I was getting most of my fish in 10-20 feet of water fishing the wind blown banks adjacent to main points. Once the wind stopped so did the bite. So I ran around chasing any wind I could find.
I anticipate the bite to get better as the water gets warmer. The lake needs a good storm to or 2 to get the level up and water some color. This is the first time in history that we have no measurable rain in February. I’m hoping that March will bring some weather which will improve the bite.
Considering this was my first time on the lake with my boat since May of 2019. I had a fun day. Folsom can be a hard fishery but if you find the right conditions it can be a fun place to fish.
