Got out on the Motherload for a fun day of fishing. Pulled up to Lake Don Pedro at about 10 am.
Payed the $35 fee at the gate at Flemming Meadows , All the boats were out on the lake so Launching was a Breeze, They have nice clean Bathrooms and my Wife surely appreciated that!
The water was crystal clear right at the ramp and the water is slowly rising. We headed up the lake checking things out for a Spring time Bass Bite. We were locating fish in 20-30 ft , they were mainly suspended relating to baitfish, I was Scoping these fish , but could not get them to go. They would swim right up to my Minnow and swim away. Started looking for staging Areas leading to Coves protected from the wind. We found a secondary point with 2 pockets around it, seemed a popular area as Boats were coming in and out of this Bay. Found more Schools shallower 15-20 ft, again went to Scoping and no luck. Tossed out a finesse Football JIg and first cast Thump ! It was a Spotted Bass about 1 lb. Then Another, and Another all schoolie Spotted Bass Males. Changed up to a Neko rig and got a few more to go up to 1.75 lbs , Fun but little guys.
I looked from Main Points , Secondary Points into Coves or Guts. There are fish in all Three Areas , I kept the boat from 15-30 FT deep, 75% of all my Bites were on a Jig, Had a few short bites , but most were a very light Tick and they would swim away with it. When the water hit 62 Deg the Largemouth started chomping the Jig in 10-20 ft of water , we caught a few Females and a few Bucks nothing big , but we had fun. Spotted Bass are all the way up in the guts, smashing the Jig! As shallow as 5 ft to 15 ft later in the day. As the temps dropped so did the bite , we pulled off at about 5pm. Caught 15-20 Fish.
Tips and Tackle Used
1/2 oz Finesse Jig, Green Pumkin/ Browns
Line -15 LB Berkley 100% Flourocarbon
Rod -Fenwick 7-3 Medium Heavy Action
Reel-Abu Garcia 7:3:1 Ratio
Cover lots of water throw the Jig about 5-10 Ft From the Bank, drag slowly and keep the boat moving, the Bass are biting off isolated Rocks. Have lots of trailers as they are short biting alot with the Smaller spotted Bass moving up. The Largemouth and Spotts are not together .
