Feb 2nd 2025 Don Pedro Res
Weather was mostly cloudy and 55-65 degrees.
Wind was 5-10mph.
Water temps were 52-54 degrees.
As we enter the second month of 2025, and with spring seemingly right around the corner, we were excited to get back out on Don Pedro Res. After getting some rain on Saturday, we were able to get on the water Sunday for a few hours. We dropped the boat in around 9am and eased out onto the lake looking for a few fish. Post front conditions can prove to be tough at times and today proved to be no different. However, we got out our Phenix rods and went to work.
The dropshot and jig proved successful right away, getting bites in 10-30 feet of water. The fish seemed to want more action from the baits. They were hitting the dropshot and the jig on the fall and also while twitching and hopping more aggressively. Amy was using a Phenix Featherweight 7’7 for dropshotting, while I put my Phenix M1 Nanotube 7’4 MH to work with the jig. The MH has a softer tip and allows me to feel the softer bites a little better.
We also tried a chatterbait, spinnerbait, A-Rig, minnow and a S-waver. None of those seemed to work for us, but we did have a few followers on the S-waver. The followers seemed a bit wary and stayed 3-5 feet from the swimbait. We lost track of the exact number, but would estimate we caught around 15, with the biggest being a largemouth. We also found some quality spots and one good smallmouth to fill out our bag.
All in all, it was a great day to be on the water. We caught some quality fish and put a few more pieces of the puzzle together. If you are thinking about going to one of the Motherlode lakes, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Don Pedro Res.
