With so many options out there how do you pick a Swimbait to throw this year? I look at many factors like the overall action of the bait, colors available and price. The Optimum Baits 6” Boom Boom rises to the top of my list immediately with its quivering head action, tight body roll and thumping tail. They come in many colors to help match what bass are feeding on in almost any lake, pond or river and are available as weedless or line-thru. It’s a presentation combination that bass can’t resist.
On my last trip the water was a bit stained due to recent rains. The lake had quite a bit of vegetation so here is the setup I used for the 6”weedless Boom Boom.
Dobyns Fury series Fr734C
Daiwa Tatula-R CT100HS 7.3:1
15# Seaguar Invizx Fluorocarbon(up to 20# for heavier cover)
8/0 Owner Flashy Swimmer
6” Optimum Boom Boom In Crusher Shad
The fish were setup holding tight to the vegetation in 3-10’ of water. Most of the fish were caught by throwing long casts and letting the bait sink with a 2-3 count. A slow roll retrieve seemed to be best but I did vary the speed on some casts to keep occasional bottom contact. I was amazed how well the bait went through weeds even with the Flashy blade. We boated quite a few fish in the 3-4# range and never needed to change the bait, so they are very durable even with these angry largemouth bass. The plastic is plenty soft enough to swim well in the 48-52 degree water and I don’t see there being a problem in even colder conditions.
