It’s definitely that time of year again. The time of year when wives, girlfriends, and significant others feel abandoned to their fowl obsessed loved ones. The waking up at zero dark thirty in the morning, to the leaving the night before just to give yourself an opportunity at reserving the highly sought after honey whole that very few hunters know about. Yup you guessed it, it’s duck season and it’s in full swing.
The late November storms have the ducks moving South as they make their way to the wintering grounds. The Klamath Basin area has froze over leaving the ducks and geese no place to go except straight Southbound down the Pacific Flyway.
The California Delta has been flooded with waterfowl which are feeding heavily on all the row crops harvested inside the islands. Almost every variation of goose has been spotted or shot, in and around the Franks Tract hunting area. Large wrath’s of diving ducks have been making their presence known in all the popular flooded islands.
Along with the diving ducks, several varieties of puddling fowl have been hopping from island to island attempting to fatten up for their trek South. With the large number of ducks which have been around, it’s been pretty easy hunting lately. Hunters have been filling their limits with ease and quality birds have been harvested on most outings.
Sprig, widgeon, mallards, and teal are the primary species targeted by hunters, and they’ve been located in abundance in and around the valley. If you were wondering when to go out and hunt, the time is definitely right now until the end of the season.
