Summer is coming to an end soon and for many of you your fishing season is coming to an end or you’re getting ready for your TOC and taking a break until next year. Some anglers not only like fish but also like to hunt when the fishing season has come to an end. Dove season starts September 1st of every year, the season goes from September 1st to the 15th then opens back up November 11th to December 25th. This provides a good change of pace from fishing and other activities as Dove hunting is a rush yet relaxing! For my tools to hunt Dove I prefer using a 12 Gauge Shotgun with a modified choke, for my shells I shoot Winchester 2 3/4…7 1/2 shot. Monday September 4th my buddy calls me up and invites me out to his property to hunt Doves. We’re hunting over a safflower field on private land, within the first hour we have a couple of birds.. then as it slowed down we placed the mojo Dove our (decoy) out in the safflower field. For those that don’t know what a Mojo Dove is, it’s a motorized decoy with wings that spins to attract birds. At times this Decoy can really bring the Birds in when its tough. It started to get hot out and no birds were flying so we called it a day, we ended the hunt with 15 birds and great memories.. also with this warm weather and walking through the tall brush always keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. To get started go to any Walmart location or sporting goods store and get a license and the tools you need to begin Hunting and get out there and try chasing some Dove! It is a good Idea to learn about all Hunting regulations and areas to Hunt Prior to just heading out. Good Luck Sheldon Bisbee.
